I was one of those people who could not understand the constant preoccupation with golf. My husband loves the game. He began teaching our four children when they were still in diapers. I watched from my task-oriented mentality.
When the kids played high school team golf, I went to the tournaments just to get away, but the emotional roller coaster of the players was not a departure from my reality. I adopted the attitude of having a lovely walk in the park. This distressed my competitive sons. “Oh, Mom. You’d say ‘nice shot’ if it landed in the water!”
Gradually, I began to realize the relationship between the game experience and the life experience: How to feel good about yourself when things are not going your way. The layers of richness grew over the years. So did the relationship with the children. It is my personal goal to encourage children to join the game.
